Notice from the Korean Intellectual Property Office: The deadline for filing an opposition after the announcement of a trademark application has been shortened from two months to 30 days
On July 3, 2025, the Korean Intellectual Property Office issued a press release announcing:Starting from July 22, 2025, the trademark opposition period will be shortened from the original 2 months to 30 days!
Trademark registration process before revision:
Application → Announcement → 2-month objection period → Registration decision
Revised trademark registration process:
Application → Announcement → 30 day objection period → Registration decision
As of June 2025, it takes approximately 12.8 months from submission to initiation of examination for domestic trademark applications in South Korea (10.5 months for international trademark applications), and there has been a long-standing demand to shorten the opposition application period in order to obtain rights more quickly. Although only about 1% of all related application and announcement cases have filed opposition applications, the remaining 99% of trademark applications also have to wait for 2 months.
However, as the information of the applied trademark is made public at the same time as the trademark application, third parties can submit opinions on the applied trademark at any time through the information provision system. In addition, a system has been established to extend the deadline for correcting the reasons for opposition applications (30 days), fully guaranteeing the deadline for third parties to submit opinions on the trademark application.

Korean Intellectual Property OfficeThe director stated that by shortening the deadline for opposition applications, the registration decision time for most of the already announced trademarks will be advanced. He also stated that in the future, the trademark examination system will be balanced, and the examination processing time will be shortened while fully ensuring public examination opportunities.
