    Latest Notice: The US Patent and Trademark Office has issued a final rule to cancel the accelerated examination of design applications

    On August 13th local time, the US Patent and Trademark Office officially issued a notice:
    The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) suspended the accelerated examination process for design patent applications on April 17, 2025, and officially issued final rules on August 14, 2025, completely abolishing the accelerated examination mechanism. This move aims to combat fraudulent applications, shorten the review backlog period, and reduce the inventory of pending design patent applications.
    In recent years, the number of requests for accelerated design review has surged by 560%, mainly due to the emergence of a large number of fraudulent applicationsThis measure also helps USPTO solve the problem of micro entity authentication violations and strengthen the risk prevention and control capabilities of the intellectual property system.
    In certain circumstances, the applicant may still proceed with the design patent application through a special examination procedure: if the applicant submits a petition to make special and provides sufficient evidence and fees, the Accelerated Examination program will continue to apply.
