Notice from the US Copyright Office: Copyright review and certificate issuance suspended, but applications can still be submitted
Recently, the US Copyright Office issued a notice on its official website stating:
Due to a shortage of government funding, both the US Copyright Office and the Library of Congress have closed. Therefore, this bureau is unable to update information, respond to inquiries, or process transactions on this website. To ensure the receipt date, registration and filing submissions will be accepted, but will not be processed. When the government reopens, website updates and all normal commercial activities will resume.
If you want to submit copyright registration or file records, you can use our online system. Submitting your registration application now will help ensure the earliest effective registration date, although submissions will not be processed until the Copyright Office reopens.
We need to remind everyone:
Although the review and issuance of certificates have been suspended, the application channel is still open and copyright applications can still be submitted normally. Moreover, submitting as early as possible can help lock in the registration date. In the future, if there is a copyright dispute, the registration time can serve as authoritative proof of time,
Especially when the creation or publication time of a work is unclear, it can directly affect the recognition of prior rights.
So, friends who have copyright registration needs still need to arrange as early as possible to seize the opportunity.
We will also continue to monitor the official updates of the Copyright Bureau. Once government work returns to normal, all review, licensing, and other businesses will be restarted, and we will update you on the progress as soon as possible.
