(1) Invention Patent
Including formal examination and substantive examination. After the applicant submits an invention patent application, the China National Intellectual Property Administration of Sri Lanka will first conduct a formal examination of the application to ensure that the documents are complete and the format is correct, and the corresponding fees have been paid. For invention applications that meet the formal requirements, the examiner will conduct substantive examination on whether the invention meets the requirements of patent law in terms of novelty, creativity, and practicality. If the patent application meets the patentability standard, the China National Intellectual Property Administration of Sri Lanka will issue an invention patent certificate and publish it in the official gazette.
(2) Design Patent
Formal review. Sri Lanka industrial design applications should be submitted within 6 months from the priority date, and patents should be published based on the results of formal examination. Any three-dimensional composition of lines or colors, regardless of whether they are related to the lines or colors that constitute the unique appearance of industrial products or crafts and can be used as their patterns, can be registered as an industrial design patent in Sri Lanka.
It should be noted that Sri Lanka is unable to submit a multi category design patent application, and if a design patent litigation is conducted in Sri Lanka, non nationals must appoint a person with Sri Lankan patent lawyer qualifications to act as an agent.
20 years from the date of application
From the date of application, it can be renewed twice for 5 years each time. The longest is 15 years.

2. Necessary documents: invention patent specification, claims, abstract, and necessary drawings;
3. Other documents (if any): transfer agreement, priority documents, power of attorney, etc.
