The Islamic Republic of Pakistan, abbreviated as Pakistan, was the first Islamic country to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. As a steadfast friend of China, we have a long-term, all-weather, and multi-faceted friendly relationship with China, which Chinese netizens refer to as the 'Ba Tie'.
Before 2005, Pakistan was a major exporter of pirated products due to rampant piracy and infringement. In 2005, the Pakistani government established the Intellectual Property Organization (PIPRO), personally led by the Prime Minister. The Pakistan Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has increased its legislative and enforcement efforts, resulting in significant improvements in the protection of intellectual property rights. The intellectual property legislative system in Pakistan includes trademark law, patent law, design law, copyright law, and relevant implementation regulations of the aforementioned laws.
Pakistan had patent laws and industrial design laws in 1911, followed by new regulations such as the 1997 Patent and Design Regulations. The current effective patent system in Pakistan is mainly regulated by the Patent Law (2000).
In 2004, Pakistan joined the Paris Convention and the World Intellectual Property Treaty. Currently, Pakistan is not a member of PCT.
