Bangladesh is located in the South Asian subcontinent, connecting three important economies in the world: China, India, and ASEAN, with obvious geographical advantages. Goldman Sachs Group listed Bangladesh as one of the "Golden Diamond 11" emerging economies in 2005. From an international economic perspective, Bangladesh has been one of the most economically dynamic countries in South Asia and even the world in the past decade, with an average GDP growth rate of over 6%. In the fiscal year 2019, it achieved an economic growth rate of 8.15%. Bangladesh is the world's second-largest exporter of ready to wear clothing, with the garment processing industry being its pillar industry. At the end of the 2019 fiscal year, Bangladesh's foreign exchange reserves reached 32.716 billion US dollars, second only to India among South Asian countries.
Bangladesh inherited the intellectual property laws of its colonial power, the United Kingdom. The main intellectual property laws include the 1911 Patent and Design Act, 1933 Patent and Design Rules, 2000 Copyright Act, and 2009 Trademark Act. These laws still cannot meet the current requirements for intellectual property protection, especially for certain aspects such as computer software, which lack clear and detailed protection measures. As a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization and the Paris Convention on Intellectual Property, as well as a signatory to the WTO Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, Bangladesh is intensifying efforts to update its relevant laws.
