The current trademark protection laws mainly include the Trademark Law of 1965 and the Trademark Regulations of 1981.
2. Zambian trademarks are managed by the Trademark Registry and the official language is English.
3. Zambia trademark registration is based on the principle of prior use, and the trademarks that can be applied for registration include commodity trademarks, joint trademarks, certification trademarks, and defense trademarks. Currently, service trademarks cannot be applied for.
4. Zambia adopts the Nice classification for trademarks and does not accept applications for multiple categories. The elements that can be registered as trademarks include text, graphics, letters, numbers, etc.
Zambia is a contracting party to international intellectual property treaties such as the Paris Convention and the WIPO Convention, and a member of the Madrid Protocol. Therefore, trademark registration in Zambia can be obtained through either the "single country registration" or the "Madrid International Registration Designated Zambia" method.
Unlike most countries, the initial validity period of trademarks in Zambia is only 7 years, and each subsequent renewal can extend the validity period by 14 years.

Submit application documents to the Trademark Office;
The examiner will conduct a formal and substantive examination of the application to confirm whether the application documents are complete and whether the applied trademark meets the basic registration requirements; If the review fails, a rejection notice will be issued and a response will be required within the specified time;
Once the review is approved, an announcement will be arranged, and the objection period will be 2 months from the announcement date;
If there are no objections or objections are not established during the announcement period, the trademark will be approved for registration and a trademark registration certificate will be issued to the applicant.
